The wind abated in the evening and I took a second walk. I walked into the dusk and returned in the nightfall, feeling somewhat refreshed by the deepening darkness. It had been so blustering in the afternoon that I changed my mind and walked instead to the library to check out some books and bought a bottle of whiskey on the way back. This had taken only a third of the distance of my normal walk, and I returned home feeling defeated as if I was unable to complete a routine task due to some personal weakness and laxity. After that I worked some time on the vocabulary which is like building a house brick by brick. I think I am progressing steadily as if gradually accelerating on a runway before reaching the point of taking off; then I would be able to fly like a free bird. But before I get to that point I need to be patient and steady. As the Old Man said to the boy in Hemingway's story (Old Man and Sea): I know many tricks and I have resolution.
